charlie rose in new york. norah o'donnell is in washington. jobless report just came out. it shows a growing number of americans are getting back to work. >> the numbers are much better than economists predicted. it's sure to become an issue in the presidential race. >> rebecca jarvis has the numbers and what they mean. >> good morning, charlie. >> what are the numbers? >> the big headline here is the big surprise, the unemployment rate dropped to 7.8%, the first time we've been below 8% since january of 2009. 114,000 new jobs created in the month of september. >> norah? >> rebecca, that's a huge drop, better than expected as you point out. how -- what happened to cause that drop? >> well, this is where the economists are really looking into the number right now, because one of the big reasons behind this number being 7.8% right now is a big increase in the number of people who involuntarily took on part-time work. that number went from 8 million people to 8.6 million people in the month of september. there are both pros and cons to something loik that happening. on the con side peop

heels of a weekend incident that left two americans dead in eastern afghanistan. charlie dagada reports from the capital, kabul. >> reporter: afghan sources tell cbs news a suicide bomber approached a joint patrol between afghan and coalition forces in eastern afghanistan before detonating his explosive vest. a coalition spokesman has confirmed that three nato service members have been killed. they won't release the nationalities pending notification of the next of kin. that's the policy. it is in an area patrolled almost exclusively by u.s. forces. at least ten afghan police and civilians were killed in the attack that the taliban has already claimed responsibility for. this comes after an incident over the weekend where it appears that u.s. soldiers and afghan soldiers got into a fire fight at a check point southwest of kabul. an american soldier and an american civilian were killed in that attack along with three afghan soldiers. it is still under investigation. but what it underlines is the challenges and difficulties of u.s. soldiers working alongside armed afghan soldiers

basic tools to prevent another catastrophe. charlie gasparino has the latest on this and joins us. charlie: we should get out why this is a big story. a pretty investing survey named the top three or four things investors are worrying about and why they are pulling money out of stocks. the dow is up big time. small investors are not in this market. they put their money in bonds and gold. they talk about market implosions. /crash and night capital blowing up and a comput fat finger. they're doing a high in sweep of the brokerages and here is what they are finding out. they are worried firms don't have safeguards. basic safeguards to prevent a massive screwup with a combination of human error and firms that have these firewalls or they are at least not adequate enough. at night capital, it is some sort of combination of technology not having the technology that would catch it but huge human error. this is a story that is not going away and one reason why is the sec investigation. tom choice, ceo of night capital still at the helm even though he was supposed to be watching and making

the new york stock exchange, the cme group and the nymex. let's take a look at the cme, charlie needles, the cme. charlie, what a day? is it all on the back of the ism numbers? >> it is. you know, chi pmi came out overnight, and that showed things have stabilized there, in china. european pmi was in line, not lighting the world on fire. a little concern over the employment situation there. but if you look at the breakdown of the u.s. pmi, you kind of hit on all cylinders. the prices paid was actually a little higher, but if you're trying to reflate the market, that's a decent measure. it had been 54 last month, 58 this month. the employment sector picked up, new order sector picked up, but we did see an uptick in the employment sector. i think you hit it on the head, ashley, that's what the market's taking focus on today. aaron ash all right, let's go to ben willis at in ncse -- nyse. does this point to a much better recovery than we thought perhaps? because i think there's still a lot of mixed data out of there. >> oh, i think we're a little ahead of the game if we're looking f
